This director-driven era of American film lasted ten years and generated such groundbreaking pictures as:Įasy Rider, M*A*S*H, The Last Picture Show, The Godfather, American Graffiti, The Exorcist, Mean Streets, Chinatown, Jaws, Shampoo, Taxi Driver, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Apocalypse Now and Raging Bull. For those who hear "film history" and think Titanic, in 1967, the major American film studios were in such disarray and the counterculture seemed to be overturning conventions with such speed that a new generation of filmmakers, by and large under the age of 30, (and universally white males), briefly seized the controls. However much is true, however much really happened that way, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How The Sex 'N' Drugs 'N' Rock 'N' Generation Saved Hollywood by Peter Biskind remains one of my favorite non-fiction reads. She was slow in learning to read, due partly to her dissatisfaction with the books she was required to read and partly to an unpleasant first grade teacher. When she was 6, her family moved to Portland, Oregon, where she went to grammar and high school. Mouse.īeverly Cleary was born Beverly Atlee Bunn in McMinnville, Oregon. And who is this woman? She gobbles up every crumb of information that Patrick gives her about the stalker, but little does she know, she’s already met the stalker through her hypnotherapy practice. When Ellen meets Patrick through an online dating service, she thinks he’s a fairly average guy, but when she learns that he has a stalker, her interest is piqued. She’s watched all of this, gently and kindly, while seeing her own opportunities for love pass her by. She’s watched love stories and stories of personal triumph unfold through her practice of hypnotherapy. The hypnotist, Ellen O’Farrell, has watched as her friends slowly paired off and have children. This is not your average story and the plot, characters, and writing are completely original. It has the same fantastic tension as Big Little Lies, while maintaining Moriarty’s sense of humour and strong character development. After reading three Liane Moriarty books, I decided to just keep going with the same author for awhile, and as it turns out, The Hypnotist’s Love Story is my favourite.
